1. Apologies for Absence

Martin Calvert, Adrian Coltman, Trevor & Diane Kitto.

2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 21st July 2011

Agreed as a true record.

3. Matters Arising

  • Planning Permission
Martin has signed the objection letter regarding 11 Old Park Road on behalf of the Group. This was as a result of discussions with the Gledhow Valley Conservation Area Group at last month's meeting over a breach of agreed planning permission within the conservation area.
  • FGVW Christmas Cards
The Group are waiting to see if a half price offer on the Christmas cards becomes available this year before placing an order. We will be unable to afford the same quality of cards as last year unless a similar offer arises.

4. Correspondence

None.

5. Action Mornings

  • Sunday 24 July
It was well attended for the holiday season with around 15 people volunteering. About 15 metres of path was completed.

Future Action Mornings

  • Sunday 21 August
Work to continue on the path. If there are sufficient volunteers over the holiday season then work will begin on the pond to try and reduce the amount of silt building up. Balsam Bashing may also take place depending on if it has started seeding or not. An earlier start than 9.45am was suggested.
  • Saturday 3 September
An additional Action Morning to clear out the Bath House ready for the Open Heritage weekend will take place on Saturday 3rd September. Paul volunteered to go into the plunge pool to help clear any debris and silt. General tidying, litter picking, pruning and clearing will take place around the Bath House.
  • Saturday 1 October
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.
  • Sunday 6 November
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.
  • Sunday 4 December
Meeting place to be confirmed at a later date.

6. Groundwork Application

The application has passed through to the next stage. There are two more meetings to take place on Thursday 1st September and Wednesday 7th September. Martin is representing the Group however he needs to be accompanied by at least one other member for the meeting to be valid. Joan and Mervyn can attend on the Thursday but a volunteer is needed for Wednesday.

7. Stewardship for FGVW

Philip Thompson form Leeds City Council is due to contact the Group following Steve Clavering's e-mail about giving the Group more decision making responsibility concerning the Woods.

The Council would like to pass on more of the decision making to the Group so that it is no longer necessary for a Park Ranger to attend the Action Mornings and other events. Joan confirmed that the Group have their own insurance through BCTV and Paul passed on the details to the Council.

It is anticipated that a Stewardship Agreement will be drafted by the Council for approval by the Group.

8. Bath House Open Day Sunday 11th September

Martin has suggested displaying the Allen Scythe at the Bath House and discussing its history as part of the Heritage Open Day.

The Group need to make a list of items they need on the day quickly as Steve Clavering will be away for a month and will be unable to provide equipment on the day unless requested well in advance.

The Group would like to encourage volunteers to provide as much home-baking as possible for the event.

9. AOB

  • Change of Evening for Core Group Meetings
It is sometimes difficult for Martin to attend monthly meetings on Thursday so he suggested an alternative night of Monday or Friday for when he was unavailable on Thursday. The Group agreed that Monday would be the best alternative. The meeting scheduled for Thursday 29th September may need to be moved to Monday 26th September - Martin will confirm nearer the time.
  • FGVW BBQ
Paul suggested the afternoon of Saturday 10th September for the BBQ for FGVW members.
  • Yorkshire Museum Gardens in York
Paul handed out leaflets on the Yorkshire Museum Gardens in York that he had received. He had also received some information on trees to pass on to Martin.
  • Balsam
Mike showed the Group photos of the Balsam growing near the car park and on the small and large island. The Balsam near the car park is quite thin as work was completed by the Group some years ago to try and eradicate the plant. However, the islands are being taken over by the plant. Balsam Bashing will have to be given priority in this area next year as the plants are already starting to seed and take over from the other plants.
  • Fallen Banking
Mike also showed the Group photos of some banking that had fallen between the car park and the bridge. This was causing the pathway to erode and flash floods to undercut the area. The Group suggested looking at the site to see if gabions would solve the problem.
  • Japanese Knotweed
There is some Japanese Knotweed at various locations in the wood. This has been reported to the Council and they have confirmed that this will be treated in the Autumn.
  • New Project Suggestion
Geoff suggested that work need to be completed on the top path between the carriageway and entrance to Gledhow Wood Close. It is very slippery and hazardous in winter due to the slope. Geoff has done a bit of remedial work to make it safer. He has cut away some of the path to try and level it out a bit. The path section between the lodge and Gledhow Wood Close would benefit from some remedial work. A holly bush also needs cutting back as it is forcing a new path to be formed around it.
  • Bat Walk
Joan gave a reminder that there is a Bat Walk on Friday 19th August at 8.30pm. Adam has e-mailed members with the details.
  • Gledhow Valley Road Works
Various meetings are taking place regarding proposed work on Gledhow Valley Road. Drivers are still speeding despite recent traffic calming measures and there are suggestions of putting in a cycle lane and strips across the road to monitor traffic. Trevor and Diane Kitto are attending the meetings and will update the Group at the next meeting.
