Claire Johnson.

2. Minutes of the Meeting Held 8th May 2025

Agreed as a true record.

3. Matters Arising

  • The "Gledfest" event at the Gledhow Sports & Social Club was very popular as a social event but not many people were buying from the stalls.

4. Action Mornings

  • Sunday 15 June 2025
It was a successful Action Morning and more than 20 volunteers met at the Bath House for a tidy up, footpath repairs, litter picking, bench tidying and tree thinning. A new strimmer was used. The information board previously stored in the bath house was put up.
  • Sunday 27 July 2025
Volunteers to meet at the junction of Gledhow Lane and Gledhow Valley Road for repairing the dead hedge that was burnt down, path clearing and hedge maintenance. Martin to source 10-12 stakes. It was proposed to work on the Beck Pasture hedge in September.

5. Trustees Update

The next Trustees Meeting will be in August.

6. Project to Eradicate Bamboo and Knotweed and Create Wetland off Gledhow Lane

A dead hedge has been created near the roadside. There is some work left to do. Some members met with Jeremy on-site and discussed extending the wetland area with some of the grant money. The estimated cost is around £7,000. Overflow water currently drains away but the water could be controlled to extend the wetland area at the other end instead. The Group agreed this was a good idea.

Some of the money could also be used for new tools and a proposal was put forward to use some of the money to refurbish "Mrs Hudd's Steps" and put in a handrail. The Group agreed to get a quote for the steps from Groundworks as the work may not be suitable for volunteers. David, Martin and Adrian agreed to discuss and put together a plan and estimates together for Steve who would then look at the finances.

Some of the grant needs to be used on a wetland information board and a replacement board for one which has decayed over time. Local schools also need to be involved in planting bluebells, wood anemone and wild garlic.

7. Project to Refurbish Footpaths

A meeting was held with Jeremy to discuss the path work. Boardwalks will only be used where necessary and recycled plastic material will be used for the paths. QA quote is required for all 3 paths separately, however it may be easier to get a grant for all 3 grouped as a single project. The Group need to pay for the design plan. Estimates received from Wade's and Groundworks are based on doing all 3 paths.

A questionnaire was given out at the recent Green Fair that asked for feedback on paths in the woods. Over 300 people responded and this will be good evidence to support any grant applications.

David Miles also spoke to Jeremy about woodland management. The Leeds Coppice Workers are keen to get involved too. The Group agreed that Lucy Clarke from the Forestry Commission would need to be involved in any discussions. Martin agreed to contact her. The Group envisaged doing a woodland management plan as part of the path work and keeping the project small to manage the immediate areas around the paths rather than looking at a long term plan across the whole woodland area.

8. Water Quality Monitoring

The report has now been published and shared at the Green Fair with the public. The Yorkshire Evening Post has also used it as part of an article on sewage.

David is currently running a petition that the Group would like to see in case they receive any questions about it. It was agreed that the petition would be useful to identify and support any further work that can be done. It may lead to us finding out where the sewage is coming from that is polluting the becks and lake. Adam will mention the petition in the next FGVW Update email.

David had a meeting with Aire Rivers Trust and Yorkshire Water. Yorkshire Water has agreed to focus on Gledhow Lake and Beck with mis-connections. Adrian also had a positive discussion with Yorkshire Water at the Green Fair.

9. AOB

  • The August Action Morning is currently timetabled for 17th August however there is a shortage of supervisors. Martin proposed either the 10th or 16th August or to miss it altogether as the Group are running a stall that month at the Chapel Allerton Festival. The date of the Action Morning to be confirmed.
  • Adrian has done a lot of cutting back outside of the Action Mornings but more needs to be done to keep areas accessible.
  • We have been donated an industrial strimmer by Roland. It was proposed we also got a cordless grass cutter.
  • There will be a FGVW stall at the Chapel Allerton Festival on 30th and 31st August. We will happily accept books for our stalls.
  • Adrian suggested putting up some 30mph signs along Gledhow Valley Road which the Group agreed was a good idea.
  • The BCS machine that we cut the meadow with has gone in for a service. Some of the teeth are wobbly and need repair.
  • Adrian requested some pallets from Steve for birdboxes.
  • Adrian reported that the lake fence keeps getting broken. Part of it is in the lake. Adrian keeps doing repairs but the Group agreed to leave it if it continues to get vandalised.
  • David reported that the Hillcrest Academy pupils did a walk in the woods and put in a mix of grass and seed across the road from Beck Pasture. There were over 30 variety of grasses and woodland flowers and they have started to grow. David will take pictures and send them to the school.
  • Teresa was approached by a lady at the Green Fair who was interested in using the field for Brownies and Scout groups. The Group were happy to open the field for guided walks but decided it would be inappropriate to have activities in there that would damage the wildflower meadow. Teresa to forward the email to Martin.
  • The Group almost sold out of cards at the Green Fair. The fox card was the most popular. Steve agreed to provide more cards for the Chapel Allerton Festival.
  • A trailer has been left in the woods. The Group are not sure if this has been fly tipped or is due to be picked up by someone so will keep watch.
